The school was established by Bessie Strydom. She started the school on their farm. This had the result that there were only two classes.
One for Xhosa children which were taught by a Xhosa woman.
The other class was for the colored children and Bessie taught them.
The school was moved to Oyster Bay four years ago. It was rebuilt in
Umzamowehtu, a township adjourning Oyster Bay. There are three teachers now of whom one, Mr. A Augustus, is the headmaster.
A fence was erected around the school
because so many people and animals
trespassed on the school grounds. We
have also given a backpack to all the
children with writing and drawing
materials inside.
We also ensured that the school got
electricity. Currently we are working on
establishing a garden at the school so
that the children can have a decent meal once a day. All this we could achieve through a very large donation to the school by the Ladies Circle in Oldenzaal (Netherlands). There are currently 120 Xhosa and colored children in the school.
